Osnovna škola Antuna Bauera

The most beautiful school garden in Croatia

The Antun Bauer Elementary School was founded in December 1997 as the III Elementary School Vukovar, Vukovar. Teaching began in January 1998. In 2007, the school changed its name to Antun Bauer Elementary School. The school system also includes two branch schools: the Svinjarevci Branch School and the Petrovci Branch School. On November 22, 2013, the school garden was declared one of the twenty most beautiful school gardens in the Republic of Croatia. It is important to note that the school had already received an award for the most beautiful garden in 2007, so this new award only confirmed the school's work in preserving nature and improving the school environment.

Antun Bauer, whose name this school bears, was a Croatian art historian, archaeologist, museum curator, collector, and conservator. He was born in Vukovar in 1911 and attended elementary school there. He was the initiator and founder of many museum institutions, including the first Gipsoteca in 1937 (now the Gliptoteka HAZU), where he served as director until 1952. He also founded the Gallery of Fine Arts in Osijek (1940/1941). Thanks to his efforts, the Archive of Visual Arts was established in 1944, followed by the Museum Documentation Center (1955), where he also served as director from 1964 to 1976. He was also the director of the Croatian School Museum. World War II delayed his idea of establishing a museum in Vukovar. However, in 1946, Dr. Bauer intensified his activities, and the city authorities made a preliminary decision to establish a museum in Vukovar.
