Osnovna škola Mitnica

Osnovna škola Mitnica

By playing to knowledge - with knowledge to life!

Mitnica is an urban district within the city of Vukovar, located southeast of the city center. It got its name from the word "mitnica", which means tollbooth - a ramp that stood at the entrance to the settlement where a fee was charged for passing through the city and selling goods at the city fair.

A Hungarian school was founded in the city in 1911.This school was abolished in 1918, and in its place, separate boys' and girls' primary schools were established. In 1947, both schools were merged into one school, which was named Osnovna škola Vladimir Nazor Vukovar in 1958. Due to an increasing number of students, a new school building was constructed in Mitnica in 1985. This was the first and only school in the city built as a single-story building. It had 14 classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art teaching aids at the time, and a sports hall was built in 1968.

Like all other schools, this school was destroyed during the Croatian War of Independence. The school's reconstruction began in 1988, and it was rebuilt on the existing foundations, retaining its previous form. The school reopened on September 6, 1999, under the name Sedma osnovna škola Vukovar, Vukovar, and later changed its name to Osnovna škola Nikole Andrića.
